I think Dr. Steven Hayes very eloquently describes the issue in this quote. The idea is that people (especially women) look at things through rose-colored glasses. The reality is often very different than what people expect.

When the reality falls short, they are disappointed and unhappy. Consequently, they may become depressed. On the other hand, when they set their expectations low, they are equally happy if that happens to be the reality.
